BUNDLE BED SONGS and A SKIMPY DRESS

Before I posted OVER BUT MAYBE NOT (and should it have been MAYBE NOT OVER BUT) I began working on an ebook of this blog

Last year I produced two printed versions - a black and white and a coloured one Both began with the first post dated Saturday August 24th 2014 and ended with MANY THANKS VICKI BRAGAN which was posted on Saturday September 12th 2015

Their initial usefulness was as a back up of the site There was material on the blog which I thought might be included in a book about the songs and the experiences which had led to, and then influenced, the writing of them

The newly proposed ebook would fulfil a different role It would be bundled up with the list of released material under which the 'smudged line' was being drawn It would also begin on Saturday August 24th but it would end with OVER BUT MAYBE NOT on Friday April 22nd 2016

And whilst the work on the ebook was proceeding slowly the fate of the bundle, would be allowed to open-mindedly unfold Because, as with almost everything else in life, one cannot be sure what is a beginning and what will be an end

The following image is meant as an illustration of that notion
In trying to bring this phase of the work to a conclusion it is throwing up all sorts of information and ideas - some which I find impossible to ignore The newspaper cutting below is an example!

Some things never change
The above dress is not skimpy but I am reminded that I wore it on the evening of May 20th 1962 when THE DOMINIES (a group I sang with for a while) opened for Ackerman Bilk in the St Andrews Halls Glasgow

And I can recall the dress well because one of the straps, which was inclined to slip off my shoulder, did so on that occasion. And when it did, and I pulled it back up, the audience responded by clapping loudly Oddly, that is the only clapping I can clearly recall from the many times I sang in public in those days And I have a theory why that might be so

But rather than try it out here I happen to have some recent words entitled A SKIMPY DRESS which I plan to record soon along with a gathering selection of spoken word tracks

In the meantime the skimpy dress words are being shunted aside onto a newly set up page (see below) at http://lyricsofasort.blogspot.co.uk/

PS The SKIMPY DRESS post was added to this one to get it out of the way of the posts which are focused mainly on the RELEASES - I think

CHUNK ONE:THE WILD BISCUITS

This idea is taking shape as I write

The option of presenting in a pdf file a complete list of the material (which in one form or another and on one site or another is out there) is being abandoned!

Instead of a long detailed document I will be posting the information in more easy to access chunks

And within those chunks can be links to the songs and words This should provide fresh impetus to the task of getting them heard whilst saving me from a potentially wearisome direct attempt to do so

There are numerous possible links to the songs but only one for each of them will be provided

Chunk One

Anyone who knows anything of the songs I have written will be aware of Wild Biscuit Music www.wildbiscuit.com and how important they have been And so it will not be surprising to see that they were heavily involved in the first significant chunk of released material Also, as further chunks are posted on this site their involvement throughout this phase of my life - and work - will be evident

The first three songs to be submitted to CD Baby for distribution were arranged by John V Saich and Mags Russell of Wild Biscuit Music They were on the EP entitled Where the last tide runs

Where the last tide runs - EP Released January 1st 2009
1.   The house with the windows 2,54
2.   Remembering Mr Toast 1.34
3.   Where the last tide runs 2.01

http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/sheilakcameron

The second group of songs released on CDBaby were also arranged by Wild Biscuit

Where the pebbles grind and scrape- EP Released January 10th 2009
1.   I've waited a long time 1:33
2.   Somehow 1:26

A seventh song (see below) also arranged by Wild Biscuit, was combined with these two EPs

Last night I dreamed about Doris Lessing - single  Released January 11th 2009

Last night I dreamed about Doris Lessing 2:04

http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/sheilakcameron4

At a later date, the seven songs were re-ordered to become the album MORE LIKE A RIVER THAN A ROAD

https://sheilakcameron.bandcamp.com/album/more-like-a-river-than-a-road-seven-songs-from-glasgow-and-haida-gwaii

This album provides a good demonstration of how the wish to get songs out there took precedence over other considerations I.e. I couldn't wait until there were enough tracks for a complete EP  And as the songs were not worked on as a group the process which led to them becoming a complete album happened over a period of several months

The album was re-released at a much later date (2013) with a different image on the insert

And after making that comment I have decided to use the image on this post It will also re-affirm for me the importance of that special place in my life, between the river and the sea and beside the brown river rising

RELEASED

The releasing of the songs and words over the past eight years only became possible when my other work had reached a settled stage of development Having written a small book explaining the work - and with the support of several interested others - I felt that it would be unlikely to fall apart completely if I began to let go of it  But I was also aware that, without some further attention (albeit from a distance) it might lose some of its required rigour

And it may be that the position I am now taking up in relation to the songs and words is of a similar kind That thought lies behind the title of the previous post OVER BUT MAYBE NOT and it is also influencing the task of putting together a complete list of all the material that has so far been released

The lists are long and detailed They provide the dates and the playing times and I am presently finding out how to embed them in a PDF document so that they can be accessed from within a post on this blog

Until that task is completed I would like to add an image and some words to this post but at the time of writing I have no idea what they might be
And having said that I am hoping my brain, which seems anyway to decide for me what to do next, will be working on it

OVER BUT MAYBE NOT

A complete list of the tracks (sung and spoken word) which have been released over the past 7 years is being prepared Its main usefulness may be as an example of how not to do it

The first tracks were released on CDBaby That site has continued to be used but only sparingly Its usefulness was overtaken by Bandcamp followed by Reverbnation - and of those two Bandcamp has been the easiest to use

In checking over of what is out there the tracks on CDBaby at http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/SheilaKCameron look particularly messy Those on Bandcamp at https://sheilakcameron.bandcamp.com/ are marginally better presented

The platform provided by Reverbnation at https://www.reverbnation.com/sheilakcameron is of a different kind And although I have rarely used it solely as a means of releasing a track it does carry 33 items and a few links to lyric videos

Another early alternative platform for trying out material was Jango, now called Radio Airplay, and at the present time my so called fan base on there stands at over 1700 But whilst it has been useful, as with many such sites, there is a sense that the owner's interest is more about earning money than assisting the song writer

The above mentioned sites have now all been searched for everything and anything that might be out there

The main observation so far is that I was remiss in not keeping a record as the 'releasing' process was unfolding Also numerous tracks were put out as singles when I should have waited (sometimes for only a few days) until they were ready to be part of an EP or a full album  As usual there is an explanation for this rather haphazard approach And it is simply that I chose to do what I felt enthused to do at the time I felt enthused

The image chosen for this post belongs with my first ever attempt to put together a selection of songs with the intention of making it available to 'others' It was on a cassette tape and below is a section of the cover My memory does not serve me well and I have no idea what songs were included but I think the title is as apt today as it was then

A main purpose then in compiling the lists is (again) a desire to draw some sort of line under the sorting process. But it is a line that could perhaps best be described as smudged Because, as the title of this post suggests, there never seems to be a complete over and done with

It reminds me of one of those walks up the fells in the Lake District as a child, with parents insisting that the climb ahead is the last one - to discover, on reaching the top of that hill, that another has appeared

As to what else the lists might achieve: my hope is that having a detailed record of what tracks are out there will also provide a clearer idea of what is still around that might be worthy of further attention And included would be some of the tracks which have been tossed into view as possible candidates for re recording

Once the lists are completed the remaining issue will be whether or not to make them available - and if so where - and in what format

NB Had it not been for the assistance of Isabel Whyte, who had in her possession a detailed record of most of the tracks, it is unlikely that compiling a comprehensive list would ever have been achieved

A POST ABOUT TODAY'S POST

A letter arrived today from an old friend in Galloway And in it was a photograph - well two to be exact - of this - lets call her  - a very bonnie lass

This is Joan Ure, also known as Betty Clark, and she is the woman who wrote the lyrics for STAY WITH IT BABY and WHEN I SAY YOU OWE ME NOTHING
I owe her a lot
It was Betty who set me off writing my own songs And she had very clear ideas about what she liked so I hope she would have been pleased with how they sound

They can be heard in the recently uploaded BLUES OF A SORT on Bandcamp at

MAKING MUD

Now available at https://sheilakcameron.bandcamp.com/album/making-mud a selection of tracks that will bring to a conclusion the task previously described as THE 70 SIFT

PART ONE was given the title SO EASY TO PLEASE and PART TWO is entitled MAKING MUD The image to accompany the selection features the So Easy to Please dog along with the Less Easy to please song writer

It was contrived from a scanned version of a collage made from a crop of a cropped photograph of a painting with some cut out bits of paper added

For anyone who is interested - a reminder
THE 70 SIFT consisted of seventy very variable tracks recorded over the years on a variety of machines Those which have survived the selection process - approximately 40 - have been given a wash and brush up

But there never had been any intention to try to transform them into more than a sample of my earlier attempts at song writing And there was always an acceptance that the finished product might be of more interest to me than to anyone else Obviously I would prefer not to be the only one

With PART ONE I chose to leave the tracks in alphabetical order This avoided trying to order them in a way that would perhaps improve the overall listening experience But there was one exception -SHALL WE GO TO MEXICO - with a dog bark at the end - was moved out of line to become the final track

And a similar adjustment is being made to the order of the tracks in PART TWO This time the moving and concluding track will be WHEN I GET UP TOMORROW

THE FOUR GUYS

The four guys who have been an immense help to me in getting some of my material out on the road are named in this larger version of the back cover for BLUES OF A SORT
The album is now available on Bandcamp at https://sheilakcameron.bandcamp.com/album/blues-of-a-sort

A direct link to the song Alone on the Road, with the image I used for its first appearance, is below

BLUES OF A SORT

As the images below were being inserted in this post the songs from the selection were being mastered None of them are new And the idea of putting them together is an old one The vocals are not as I would like them to sound but I decided they 'would do'

I have also been preparing two images which might be used on a CD

A POSSIBLE FRONT COVER
For the back cover there are two possible versions - both with mistakes in the text - see below Both use the names of the four guys who have been an immense help to me in getting some of my material out on the road They can be heard singing along on the track ALONE ON THE ROAD - which is why the title features on the front cover

Both images will probably be tidied up a bit over the coming days
And for now that is all I want to say about this selection - except

PS As two of the tracks now on this selection were recently uploaded to Bandcamp as singles they have been temporarily removed from there

YOU DON'T KNOW MY MIND

About the same time as I was reacquainting myself with the song STAY WITH IT BABY I was reminded of another blues I sang often - in the days when I sang often
It is the very well known and often recorded Folk Blues YOU DON'T KNOW MY MIND

Two verses were still very familiar to me (I don't recall ever knowing more than two) but after a hunt on-line for versions of the lyrics recorded by others I began to consider using a few additional words which felt right for me  Many of those I had found were out with my experience and I would have been unable to sing them with any conviction

Those words are on the recording I eventually made of the song And recording them was almost enjoyable -  which is not my usual recording experience
Also I did not spend hours trying to get a good take The one I have used arrived quite quickly and I decided  it 'would do' And after it had made a visit to Ca Va and been given some special treatment by Fraser Speirs and Brian Young it has been uploaded to Bandcamp

The link to the song was https://sheilakcameron.bandcamp.com/track/you-dont-know-my-mind but it has now been included in the selection entitled BLUES OF A SORT

P.S I have never been convinced that there was anything of value to others in my interest in writing and recording songs BUT singing this one did give me a certain feeling of release  And it would be excellent if that was a feeling that others might experience when singing along with it

JOAN URE'S STAY WITH IT BABY

This post is a revised version of an earlier one
The song Stay with it Baby - with a backing - will soon be on Bandcamp as part of the selection BLUES OF A SORT

The lyrics were written by Joan Ure and there is more about her on my web site at http://www.sheilakcameron.com

In thinking about an image I might use for the track I was unable to find the original words for the song as written or typed by Joan Ure  And as she was always very particular about the punctuation I have avoided writing them down anywhere

But the words for the song were in my head and I am confident they are correct - although the emphases in the singing of them may not be as accurate as Joan Ure would have liked them to be

Also, as I wanted to use an image which was closely associated with her, I have chosen to use other words by her - as they were sent to me - on the paper on which she had typed them

MEET MASTER DUBS

Here he is Newly devised Inclined to be expensive Often unavailable Capable of making a big difference  Almost always desirable

The idea of a MASTER DUBS arrived unsolicited one morning and it got attached to a clay figure I had made many years ago And he provided some fresh impetus to the never ending task (so it seems) of sorting the unsorted material

He changed the focus to two main categories of songs; those which were candidates for mastering and those which had been previously mastered - and which would benefit from some overdubbing And with those categories in place a third one appeared; songs which I might re-record. Three new folders were then created: FOR MASTERING, FOR DUBS and FOR RE-RECORDING

PS It was also good to discover that there once was a locomotive works in Glasgow Scotland called Dübs & Co. The link is below https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%BCbs_and_Company

SO EASY and NOT SO EASY

It's not easy to describe this rather odd selection of material So far it is being referred to as a sample of old and very variable attempts at song writing: caution with occasional dog barks And that may be all that is required

It consists of tracks from PART ONE of the THE SEVENTY SIFT. It had been rechristened SO EASY TO PLEASE and when funds and energy allow a planned PART TWO will probably be produced

The tracks have now been tagged and uploaded onto Bandcamp as a complete album at https://sheilakcameron.bandcamp.com/album/so-easy-to-please

The photograph for the image is very poor quality but it is the only one I have of the dog who got lost - in the snow

SO EASY TO PLEASE and DOES IT MATTER

The title SO EASY TO PLEASE is being considered for PART ONE of the SEVENTY SIFT

Unfortunately, when checking if anything similar had been used, I saw there was a Cold Play song called Easy to Please However as my easy to please is about a dog and belongs in a lyric written 6 years before Chris Martin was born, I am keeping it - for now

THE SEVENTY SIFT

THE SEVENTY SIFT (a working title) will at last conclude the prolonged sorting of old tracks The outcome will be two CDs of acoustic only songs and included will be some of my earliest attempts at song writing The plan is to have a Part One and a Part Two with approximately 18 tracks in each

And, as the songs were in various states of repair, a main criteria when deciding on the final selection has been their sound quality

It will be some time before Part One is ready to be heard but the selection is below There is a certain appeal in leaving the tracks in first line alphabetical order - with an exception
I might change the position of 16 and 17 so that the concluding sound will be the dog bark

1.  Back up from down
2.  Blunt face man
3.  Did you sleep in the snow Mr Toast
4.  Education pays the nation
5.  For she comes with a bottle in her hand
6.  From a tree a leaf came falling
7.  I am sorry your brother is almost dead
8.  I look you look
9.  I love sheep
10. I was sitting on the beach drinking a beer
11. I'm giving my head a rest
12. I'm giving up - with Mr Toast barking
13. It didn't mean a thing
14. My friend likes the country
15. Naked as the day I was born
16. Shall we go to Mexico - with dog bark at the end
17. Surely no it could not happen

THE MISCELLANEOUS SIX - with no clicks

THE MISCELLANEOUS SIX consists of ten previously heard tracks - with no clicks in between - as one might hear them during a late night performance in a very sparsely attended venue

The playing time is 18 minutes plus some seconds

I came across them some months ago and got them mastered

I was then faced with deciding what next - if anything - to do with them
The selection has been sitting on my desktop as other tasks took precedence - and anyway, as with some of the other material, I can only be interested in it when I am - interested in it

But it is another part of the sorting out process and I thought I should follow through and put it on Bandcamp (as a birthday card) and as a free download - which I will do later today

The above cobbled together image may be changed if I can think of a more suitable one

THE LONG DELAY or SKC AND THE CBC

For a very long time I have intended to prepare some words, similar to those which follow, for a specific purpose The delay in doing so gave me the title for the post and if the outcome is positive I will add some further comments further down the line

In 1969 I set out with a friend to drive from a small town in Southern Alberta to Vancouver before sailing north to Haida Gwaii on the Skeena Prince

The Skeena Prince at Northland Navigation dock, Vancouver, BC. Along with the Northland Prince she sailed from Vancouver to the Queen Charlotte Islands (via Prince Rupert)

Several life changing experiences occurred during my time on the islands but within and around them I did continue to write songs. Writing songs and performing them had become a somewhat serious preoccupation while I had lived and worked in Glasgow Scotland - and before I had arrived in Canada

Two song related events require particular mention Using a small reel to reel recorder I had submitted a tape to a station called CFPR which was located across the water to the east of Haida Gwaii, in Prince Rupert*  A letter relating to the songs on that tape is one of the four in the collage below Quoting the content it says 'We played the music extensively as you probably heard and found it most enjoyable'

I have no memory or record of what exactly was on the tape but can speculate with some confidence that one of them would have been WHERE THE LAST TIDE RUNS
A tape of probably much the same material, was also sent to CBC Vancouver as a means of auditioning. The remaining three letters relate to that submission
The relevant text from each of them will be placed below it

The four letters as a collage only

In letter one (top left) I am being informed that my tape was being returned, that my submission was successful and - again quoting -  'I am happy to add that one of the adjudicators was very enthusiastic about it, which is fairly unusual'.  It was signed by Hilda Wilson. There is no indication of her reponsibilities at the CBC

In the second letter (top right) with the heading Radio Audition - Popular Variety is the following paragraph ' Our Board of Judges who are hired on a per-occasion basis from a free lance pool of professionals and whose judgements reflect their estimate of the ability of the auditionee, gave the fullest attention to your performance, and we are pleased to advise that you have been found acceptable by the CBC' This one was signed by Raymond Whitehouse, Regional Program Director. B.C

The third letter (bottom left) is about an arrangement for lunch with Hilda Wilson She also chooses to add a PS in hand written words Again I will quote ' The Bob Smith* (who writes for the Sun and has been our 'Jazz' expert for many years - "Hot Air") is the adjudicator who liked you - and he would like to be included in our luncheon! So let me know. HW
It is pleasing to provide a separate copy of the post script

Recalling the fact Bob Smith had liked some of my material has provided much encouragement over the years And my pleasure has grown as I have became more fully aware of his knowledge and reputation

But returning to the main purpose of this communication: it is on the back of my distant and long ago contact with CBC Vancouver and CFPR that I recently decided to make a considered effort to bring two songs (at least) to the attention of some of the radio stations in British Columbia After all, the songs do belong there.

But while I wrote lots of songs during my time in Masset and have written many others which are closely associated with the islands, I have chosen only two. The first, WHERE THE LAST TIDE RUNS has been played on the radio in several other countries and I thought this song was most likely to have some appeal. The second one is entitled  ON THE ROAD TO HAIDA GWAII.

The two songs come from different times. WHERE THE LAST TIDE RUNS was written in the summer of 1970 while camping between the river and the sea along the Beitush Road in Tlell.  ON THE ROAD TO HAIDA GWAII  was written in 2015 on returning to Vancouver from a trip to Masset where I had been staying along the Tow Hill Road. Although  it touches on the subject of love and mentions a Subaru car - it expresses, in the middle section, something of my deep affection for Haida Gwaii

The words from that section feature in the image which is alongside the song on Bandcamp

Both songs can be heard in wav format on the site using the following links https://sheilakcameron.bandcamp.com/album/more-like-a-river-than-a-road-seven-songs-from-glasgow-and-haida-gwaiiIt is the last of seven songs on the CD MORE LIKE A RIVER THAN A ROAD

PS For anyone who is familiar with my material the delay is understandable and for anyone who might be interested in the reasons it got sidelined for a significant length of time, they can be found on the site at www.custtad.com

A DOG SONG

Having been offered a free submission to a song writing contest and, at first wrongly understanding it had to be in the novelty/comedy category, I chose this one which features a dog

It was an acoustic only track but it had been recently mastered so was in reasonable condition And to prepare for the submission I added it to my material on Reverbnation
It can be heard there at
https://www.reverbnation.com/sheilakcameron/song/25219899-the-dog-song

The lyric (which is also on that site) makes reference to a lover who has a preference for confiding their deepest thoughts to the dog  And, appreciative of both sides of the predicament described, I am using an old photograph of a dog I talked with frequently and most satisfyingly

TELL ME MORE

The songs on the selection TELL ME THAT NOW are listed below They can now be heard on Bandcamp at https://sheilakcameron.bandcamp.com/album/tell-me-that-now

With the exception of the three tracks with arrangements by Wild Biscuit Music this is an acoustic only selection of songs

1.     A Perfect Landing (with WBM arrangement)
2.     Don't Sigh Even Slightly
3.     Still I Love You
4.     My Love is velvet
5.     Two Inches Tall (with WBM arrangement)
6.     The Mountain
7.     I Walked Out One Morning
8.     You'll Like it at the Waterworks
9.     Lowlands
10. Tell Me That Now (with WBM arrangement)

The following comments are some of those which were used for the songs during previous outings:

1 A Perfect Landing was written in response to the suggestion that a Reiki healing could travel 8000 miles and rid me of a heavy cold

2 Don't Sigh is just another of the many love songs I have written although I do like the chorus

3 Still I love You was one of the first love songs I wrote and I have a memory of singing it to people I had never met before in a house in Muswell Hill London England

4  I am unsure what to say about My Love is Velvet so will say nothing

5 Information about Two Inches Tall can be found on my web site at www.sheilakcameron.com but most of it refers to the recording by Tom Conti  However, Wild Biscuit originally provided the arrangement for my spoken word version and it is good to have it included in this selection

6 The Mountain is surely the song with the most obvious statements ever But it has powerful associations for me

7 The walking out referred to in this song took me to the beach across the road from the house where I originally lived in Masset Haida Gwaii

8 A very early song written after being taken by friends, for the first time, for a walk around the Waterworks in Glasgow

9 There are numerous lyrics for this famous shanty but I recorded the version which I used to sing often a long time ago

10 Also written a very long time ago after the loss of a good friend: it is now a reminder of others who are no longer around

TELL ME THAT NOW

Many months ago I unexpectedly received a track from the exceedingly generous and gifted John Saich and Mags Russell of WILD BISCUIT MUSIC  It was an arrangement of a small song of mine originally called Loneliness but now entitled TELL ME THAT NOW

And anyone who knows anything of my material will be aware how highly I rate WBM and how fortunate I feel to have had many of my songs arranged by them For me, each and every time, on first hearing, their arrangements have sounded just right

The arrangement for TELL ME THAT NOW is an example But while their contribution was excellent there were technical problems with the vocal and it has not been possible to make the track available - until now

Then, a few weeks ago I contemplated using it - and its title - for a selection of some of those songs which still had no set home to go to A few of them have been out and about before as single tracks on Bandcamp but I am hoping they will enjoy their time together on the same site
The plan is to get them there soon

The man in the photograph appeared alongside the track LOWLANDS when it was initially uploaded to Bandcamp It showed him at an earlier time in his life
I described him then and will again as 'not my love but a man I loved' The song LOWLANDS is included in the selection TELL ME THAT NOW

For anyone who would like a bit more information this post is followed by another entitled TELL ME MORE

UNBELIEVABLE BUT . . .PLUS

Was it a mistake or an aberration? Should I enjoy it or be confounded? Well so far I am enjoying it

When making one of my occasional visits to Reverbnation a site which offers many opportunities to get ones songs heard and which (with the exception of YESTERDAY I FELT TWO INCHES TALL) has rejected all my submissions - I came across the information which is posted below

My material is in the Spoken Word category because, having begun recording a lot of spoken word tracks, that was where I felt it belonged But I also discovered that being in that category rather than e.g. Singer Songwriter (which I thoroughly dislike anyway) my rankings would be improved

Then, for some reason beyond my comprehension, I saw that my local Rank had continued to be No1 (where it had been for a long time) but my National rank had changed to No 1 and my Global rank had jumped up 215 places to No 3!

And even as I write this I am taking it to be an aberration But for now I do also confess to being unbelievably delighted

PS The Global Rank for all genres was 118,829 and this had a steadying effect on my euphoria But then a few days later the Global Rank (all genres) jumped up number to 77,219 and then 58,473 And by January 30th the Global Rank was back to 2 and the Global (all genres) was down to 721

However on February 17th 2016 the ranks are as printed below and I am even more perplexed than I was before

GOODBYE BABY BLUES

Now on Bandcamp at
with the incomparable Fraser Spiers on Blues Harp
And much improved by master engineer Geoff Allan of Cava Sound Glasgow www.cavasound.com

The vocal on this track was weaker than I would have liked it to be but I recorded it as a one off after a three day rest from the song

It felt more like a performance than a recording - even tho I was the only one in the audience And I was so pleased to have got through it from the beginning to the end without making any mistakes I chose to stay with it But in retrospect I should probably have had a few more goes

But what the vocal lacked has been compensated for by the skill and expertise of Fraser Spiers, Brian Young and (as indicated above) Geoff Allan

There have been several versions but the track presently on Bandcamp is the final one
